Little Rock Spouses’ Club statement regarding Membership:
A few months ago, a same-sex spouse did inquire about membership to the
Little Rock Spouses’ Club. Since she is not a DOD ID card holder, we could
not extend a Little Rock Spouses’ Club membership to her.
Our 2011 Constitution and By-Laws state that active membership is available
to all spouses with a current DOD ID card and access Little Rock AFB. As a
private organization on a DOD installation, the majority of our meetings and
activities are held on base, therefore base access is necessary. The club,
as a private organization, is not authorized to grant base access.
We do have events and activities that are open to everyone (members and
non-members) to attend. To date, only one of our events is members only; a
Christmas Potluck Luncheon. All other events so far, Bunko Night, Trunk or
Treat, Trivia Night, Mad Hatter and Happy Hour at the Thrift Shop were all
open to anyone who wanted to attend. Our next three events that we are
planning will also be open to all to attend; not only members. In our
correspondences with this spouse, we did invite her to attend any of our
public events.
In response to this individual’s request, the club is currently reviewing
our Constitution to see what changes we can make to best meet the needs of
all military spouses.
Respectfully,
Christine Daugherty
LRSC President 2012/2013
